Academic background

From Sarajevo to UCLA, and back to the classroom

Dr. Mehovic's consulting rests on a formal foundation in computer science: a doctorate in database performance under one of the founders of the Internet, years of research in database systems, and a continuing commitment to teaching.

Degrees

Education

Ph.D.

Computer Science

University of California, Los Angeles · 1989

Dissertation: Performance Modeling of Concurrency Control, UCLA Computer Science Department Technical Report CSD-890011. Committee chair: Leonard Kleinrock, whose work on packet switching and queueing theory underpins the Internet. The dissertation applied analytical performance models to the concurrency-control mechanisms that let many users share a database at once, work that still informs every performance engagement EntrePro takes on.

Supported by UCLA research assistantships, 1986–1989.

M.S.

Computer Science

University of California, Los Angeles · 1985

Thesis: Design and Implementation of TeleWeb On-line System. Built a text-based online service, an early precursor of the web-era information systems that followed, for dial-up public access to bulletin boards, news, and advertisements.

Supported by UCLA scholarships, 1984–1986.

B.Sc.

Electrical Engineering & Computer Science

University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina · 1983

Graduated as the top student of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, awarded the faculty's gold medal. Undergraduate research in the university's computer laboratory produced some of his first published papers on document retrieval and statistical analysis software.

Research

Database performance, from theory to practice

Dr. Mehovic's research career began in Sarajevo and continued at UCLA, IBM, and in industry. The common thread is measuring and modeling how data systems behave under load, then designing systems that behave better.

  1. 1991 – 1994

    IBM Performance research, Dallas

Developed a queueing-theory performance model for office-software capacity planning, led the laboratory's performance process, and published on performance modeling in software development and on generating short unique database keys in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin.

  2. 1984 – 1990

UCLA Researcher and instructor, Computer Science

Research on the performance evaluation of database concurrency control, co-authoring "Poisson Winner Queues" with Leonard Kleinrock in Performance Evaluation (1992). Taught programming courses and presented "Information System of UCLA" at the International Seminar University Today in Dubrovnik.

  3. 1983 – 1984

    Energoinvest, Sarajevo Research team member

Member of the team developing a relational database management system, focused on an IntelliSense-like SQL interface, decades before such features became standard in database tools.

  4. 1979 – 1983

University of Sarajevo Computer laboratory research team

Co-developed INDOS, an interactive document-handling system implemented on a minicomputer, with inverted-list retrieval and performance evaluation published at international symposia and in Praksa, the Yugoslav journal for informatics. Also built a program package for statistical analysis of multidimensional tables and co-authored the EQUAL language specification.

Teaching

Adjunct professor and instructor

San Diego State University

Adjunct professor

Taught a graduate course in database and data warehousing, and presented "Record Linkage Theory" at the Computational Science Research Center colloquium (2003).

University of Dallas

Adjunct professor, Graduate School of Management

Taught database management to MBA students, using Oracle, with an emphasis on how data design drives business outcomes.

Dallas County Community College

Adjunct professor

Taught introduction to computers and C++ programming.

University of California, Los Angeles

Instructor and teaching assistant

Taught programming courses while completing doctoral research in the Computer Science Department.
